About the Author At the age of 21 Karl Hargestam left his home Sweden, for the mandate God has given him to reach the unreached people in Africa with the Gospel. During his early ministry in Africa, Karl, together with his family and staff, became the reason to an enormous change amongst African tribes that never before had heard the name of Jesus. Many of these tribes now have strongly established local churches. Karl and his wife Jennifer are founders of Joshua Campaign International, a pioneer mission and evangelism movement that reaches hundreds of thousands each year and have seen more than 3 million people respond to the Gospel. In their crusades they have had crowds of over 300,000 in one single service. Thousands of churches have been planted as they call for a Gospel army of believers to join the great “assignment”. In Karl Hargestam's book, The Assignment, Journey to the Extreme, he takes the observant approach to his characters and the transformations they make in order to find the right courses throughout their lives. The main character, Cole, is a teacher who is overworked, underpaid and constantly critiqued by his boss and peers. He then makes a life-changing choice when he intervenes into one of his student's lives, which leads him to places about which he's only dreamt. Hargestam is a good storyteller and The Assignment is a modern-day fable of taking the road less traveled.After leaving his home in Sweden at age 21, the author took on the challenge of reaching the unreachable people of this planet. He learned how to pilot a helicopter so he could venture even further into more remote areas to reach isolated tribes. During his early ministry in Africa, Karl saw a miraculous change among the people in tribes that had never heard the name of Jesus. Today, many of these tribes have well-established churches in their villages.

However, Hargestam is by no means a novice writer with over 3 million books sold outside the U.S. The Assignment has been under development over the last nine years and is the first book in a series. Reflecting on the events that transpired in the mission fields, Karl often wondered if they really occurred because they seemed quite surreal with the passage of time. Yet, they did; they really happened. His feet were on the soil of tribes totally unaware of the western way of life. Karl was often the first messenger to reach those tribes with the Gospel--discovering that while on God's assignment, the impossible became possible. These stories were used as the basis for his book.

Did you ever know God wanted you to do something, but you really didn't like what He was telling you to do? If so, you'll be able to relate to and enjoy The Assignment Journey to the Extreme. Although Cole, the main character, didn't feel like "missionary" material, God had work for him to do. A bit similar to Moses' experience, God made it clear that he wanted Cole to go to Africa. So, to Africa he went. Because of his faithfulness, amazing things happened both abroad and at home.
Although this book was a bit hard to follow at first (I somehow missed that this book is part fiction/part memoir) it's a very worthwhile read. It was a great reminder that God can use us---weak vessels though we may be---to accomplish His purposes.
