The Billionaire Runaway Fiancée Invested in Love Series Book 2 edition by Jenna BayleyBurke Contemporary Romance eBooks

I got 26% into this book and couldn’t bear it anymore. I purchased it because it’s supposed to be a sequel to Compromising Positions, which I read years ago and remember it to be pretty good. Don’t know whether my memory is faulty, but this book is so poorly written, the characters so unlivable, I couldn’t finish it.

There is nothing believable about the storyline. I can’t connect with the characters. The author tells , instead of showing. We learn the hero has a felon for a father, (former PD officer turned druggie,) who died(?) the he was fostered by a super rich family(?) and he has a lot of baggage because women don’t want him once they learn he’s not a pure blue blue. I have question marks here because none of it hangs together, the backstory seems painted on the hero, and I kept waiting for what seemed to be missing pieces of the narrative to appear to make any of this make sense or matter at all.

I didn’t pay attention to the # of stars, or the ratio of 1-5 stars or I would have known not to
Purchase this book.

The author couldn’t have a had a good editor because it seems that half of the story is in the authors head, because she sure didn’t put it on the page.

A disappointment and a waste of time and money.

A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very different billionaire marriage of convenience storyline. We do have our billionaire (Curtis Frye) who is tall, dark and handsome and is CEO of Golden City, a Frye family property development conglomerate. He has struggled his entire life to prove himself to the Frye family who adopted him when he was 9 years old and of course he has "baggage" to deal with from that time prior to his adoption (sound familiar?). Enter the ever faithful personal assistant, Robyn Tindall, who manages Curtis and his life and is dedicated, loyal, and of course in love with her employer. Curtis wants out of the publicity and limelight that comes with being a major force in the business world and a Frye family member, so he comes up with a scheme that if he's engaged to be married, the media will lose interest in him. He picks Robyn, his personal assistant, and she agrees to be his fiancée.....initially. After realizing she can't fake being his fiancee because to her it is real......., she runs. Not the most mature action, but she is only 23. What surprises the reader is Curtis runs after her, trying to convince her to stay and continue the facade of their engagement. This is where the bulk of the story takes place with Curtis pulling out all the stops to get her to stay with him as his "fake" fiancée.

The banter between the characters is quick witted and clever, but I could have used a little more conversation between the characters at times as they try to figure out the path they are now on. Robyn and Curtis are drawn to each other and they're trying to figure out why, particularly Curtis. The sexual chemistry is intense and won't disappoint the reader.!!! Very romantic!!! I did feel the ending of the book was rushed somewhat and could have had a little more time spent on it, but all in all it was a delightful read and one I would recommend. Definitely 4.5 stars.
Curtis is the guy the media can’t get enough of...handsome, rich, so driven he’s the top 10 of every category in the “Top 10” list. Too busy making business deals and staying at the top of the heap, he doesn’t spend time getting busy with the ladies, which is a good thing because he definitely doesn’t believe in love. Robyn is the invisible to him most of the time assistant whom he ends up respecting mainly because she keeps his life running seamlessly and has proven herself to always have his back. Unfortunately, however, she’s nowhere near capturing his heart, even when she tells him he already has hers.

Wearing cheap clothes, ultra thick glasses, and not that striking we’re told except for her green eyes, Robyn seems to be poised to become a modern day Cinderella. Problem was Curtis clearly didn’t come across as overly Prince Charming. This guy looks out for numero uno, folks,….himself. Sure, it’s revealed he has a past he misinterprets as determining his future. Hence, the baggage he ultimately has to work through. You see, this guy can’t see his proverbial forest for the trees.

You’ve likely heard the expression “Money can’t buy you love.” Well, this “never takes no for an answer”, stubborn/thick headed/legendary deal maker is about to learn the meaning of that very concept slowly but surely. He proposes a fake proposal of marriage, but he is clueless she has fallen for him, even when she is standing front and center of him in full wedding day glory regalia. I think that is when I loved this hero even less and my heart started to break even more for this “maybe he’ll love me someday” heroine. He was definitely living in denial, because even sub-characters pointed out to him it was obvious she had feelings for him.

I often felt more sympathy than angst in this one, folks, at least in the first half. Sympathy for the heroine, that is. By 50%, it switched to frustration with a touch of admiration because after Robyn sings like a canary and admits her feelings, which are not reciprocated, she turns somewhat strong and sassy in reminding him she’ll never settle for anything less than true love.

If you are patient enough to wait for a handsome but reluctant to feel/admit to love hero who takes forever to come to his senses, while watching the heroine want what she can’t have but eventually fights back with sassy words, you’ll likely really enjoy this book. As a true romantic at heart, I felt romance took a real beating until the very end.

Oh, I should mention I wasn’t overly fond of Robyn coming across as an ugly duckling in the very beginning. Somehow the fancy clothes changes everything, and Curtis can’t keep his hands to himself. I guess you could say that element makes the story line now a mixture of Pretty Woman and Cinderella.

Though the writing did flow and seemed to be well-written (except for the non-dramatic, not enough groveling/too convenient ending), you will ultimately be the one to decide if this “love sure didn’t come easy” theme appeals to you.

Title The Billionaire’s Runaway Fiancee, Series Invested in Love, Author Jenna Bayley-Burke, Pages 208, stand-alone, some very steamy scenes, reluctant to feel/admit love hero, open/honest heroine who doesn’t hide her feelings, no cheating, no love triangle, no OW/OM drama, heroine gets her heart stomped on repeatedly.

The writing style is just plain annoying. 17% into the book and I couldn't take it anymore. I can't follow what she's writing at all. It's all over the place.
Like this book think little more action might have been better but it was good.
Writing style, story line, irritating characters - take your pick. He was going to fire her for being dishonest about not "telling him she had been offered another job" - really? Just couldn't couldn't suffer through anymore.
